Car Insurance – What Every Responsible Car Owner Should Not Be Without

Every car owner should be responsible enough to have the car insurance at least within the minimums that are set by the department of motor vehicle where he is to operate his vehicle. This is actually a federally mandated requirement.  Insurance for all vehicles plying the roads and highways of the United States are required in recognition of the need for third parties to be compensated for property damage or bodily injury in accidents that these vehicles might cause unintentionally.

The basic coverage that is required is composed of two parts, which are the bodily injury cover and the property damage cover. Together, this could be referred to as a BIPD cover. You might also find a numeric representation of this cover consisting of three numbers – i.e. 10/20/10.  This basically means that the coverage is $10,000 for bodily injury caused on one person or a maximum of $20,000 in total for bodily injury in one accident, and $10,000 for property damage compensation.

Additional Coverage

Other additional coverage may or may not be required depending on the regulations of the department of motor vehicle across the different states. The most common additions would include a personal insurance protection and an uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. The personal insurance protection or the PIP gives financial indemnity for the vehicle’s driver and a specified number of passengers to cover for necessary medical expenses resulting from a vehicular accident.

The uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, on the other hand, provides for a source of financial assistance in case the person who is found at fault in an accident does not have sufficient coverage to address the medical and property repair or replacement costs ensuing after the accident.  When a vehicle owner invokes this coverage, however, he normally would have to waive his right to sue the driver at fault for any financial indemnity even when his expenses rack up to an amount significantly more than his uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage amount.

What's the Limit?

There is no limit as to how much car insurance a car owner could take out. Realistically, it should be enough coverage to cover the average medical cost resulting from accidents in the area where he is to operate his vehicle. You can find out about the specific statistics in your area to get a good idea of the kind of coverage you might want to take out. Remember that the more benefits you have in your policy, the more your premiums will be. Likewise, the higher your coverage is, the more expensive your insurance policy will be.

Car Insurance a Necessary Evil
Something that many consider a necessary evil is insurance coverage. In most locations, you need to have this on your home (if you are the homeowner) and you should also have it on your own cars when you need to operate a vehicle.
